| Description | This volume principally comprises poetry extracts copied and compiled by Princess Charlotte of Wales (including Thomas Milton and Alexander Pope). It also includes copies of poetic letters sent by Lord Erskine. Erskine's letters include: an account of the 'battle' between [bare knuckle boxers] [Tom] Cribb, the British Champion, and the American [Tom] Molineux [28 September 1811] (pages 48-50); and letters to Frederica, Duchess of York (regarding General Maitland's monkey [possibly a cotton-top tamarin], and a lock of Charles James Fox's hair) (pages 51-52, 54), and Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge (a fantasy story about an enchanted lemon involving dragons and magic [thought to be inspired by Sir Antony van Dyck's portrait of Margaret Lemon]; noted that the letter was accompanied by a lemon) (pages 52-53). |
