Title | Letter [in French] from the Princess of Wales to Mrs. Clayton [GEO/ADD/28/074], informing her of negotiations in connection with Mr Clayton's succession to his father's estate and advising her to 'take your measures', and commenting also on 'a marriage with an heiress, who has but one brother'; with transcription in French and English translation [GEO/ADD/28/044]. |
Date | 23 September [a later pencil note suggests '?1718', while another on the mount suggests '1721?' ] |
Writer | Caroline, Princess of Wales (1683-1737) |
Addressee | Clayton, Charlotte, Mrs William |
Description | The Princess reports that Mrs Clayton's steward [identified as Lord Sunderland by a postscript note by Mrs Clayton] is negotiating with a clergyman [identified as Bishop Atterbury by a postscript note by Mrs Clayton] 'who manages the affairs of him who pretends to the succession of your husband in his father's estate', and that the 'suit' is due to begin on 'the first day of the term'. She recommends that Mrs Clayton inform the Master of the Rolls of this. |
Notes | Written from 'Richement' [presumably Richmond?]. The original letter is GEO/ADD/28/074. The French transcription and English translation are on two halves of GEO/ADD/28/044. Both documents bear the circled number '4', which shows the order in which the original letter was bound. The proposed date of 1718 is suggested as it is before the Jacobite attempt of 1719. This pencil note also suggests that the reference to the marriage of an heiress with only one brother may refer to Archduchess Maria Josepha of Austria. |
