| Description | The Princess reports that, while friends are 'easy' as to the matter of her children, 'I tremble for my freinds [sic]'. She also asks Mrs Clayton not to visit, as 'a certain person will spy you'. |
| Notes | The original letter is GEO/ADD/28/095. The French transcription and English translation are on two halves of GEO/ADD/28/047. Both documents bear the circled number '24', which shows the order in which the original letter was bound.
Mrs Clayton has added a note to identify 'Sir Joseph' as Sir Joseph Jekyll. She also records that there was a plan to deduct £20,000 from the Prince's revenue as a sum for the maintenance of the Prince's children, whom the King had taken away, and that this letter had been written when Mr Clayton was in the Treasury, so that Mrs Clayton was not allowed to visit the Princess publicly.
The date suggested presumably relates to these matters. |
