Title | Letter [in French] from Queen Caroline to Mrs. Clayton [GEO/ADD/28/122], expressing pleasure at hearing of her good health, commenting that she thinks there will be difficulties with regard to 'the matter of the salt' and asking 'our good freind [sic'] [Mr Clayton] to speak to the Members [presumably, in Parliament], particularly Thomas [?] Earl and his son, and noting that the King 'has this affair very much at heart'; with transcription in French and English translation [GEO/ADD/28/068]. |
Date | n.d. [a later pencil note suggests '?1730'] |
Writer | Caroline, Queen (1683-1737) |
Addressee | Clayton, Charlotte, Mrs William |
Notes | The original letter is GEO/ADD/28/122. The French transcription and English translation are on two halves of GEO/ADD/28/068. Both documents bear the circled number '51', which shows the order in which the original letter was bound. At the bottom of the French transcription is a note 'this was writ when she was queen [sic]', and a separate slip attached to GEO/ADD/28/122 records 'when Queen'. A note also identifies 'our freind' [sic] as being Mr Clayton. The proposed date is suggested as this is when the Salt Tax was removed. |
