TitleLetter from Prince Edward to [George, Prince of Wales] regarding the state of the British Fleet and the Devonshire Militia
Date19 July [1759]
WriterPrince Edward Augustus (1739-1767)
AddresseeGeorge, Prince of Wales (1738-1820)
DescriptionEdward writes that L[or]d Anson informed him of George II's consent to his joining the Fleet under Sir Edward Hawke and to meet Capt[ain George] Edgecombe [Edgcumbe] of [HMS] Hero. The letter also includes mention of the number of sailors in the French Fleet and their distraction tactics using sails; Swedish ships; meeting Capt[ain] Clemens of [HMS] Pallas; Brest; threats and insults delivered to the French by Capt[ain Augustus] Hervey of [HMS] Monmouth; and the French Force's apology for firing upon the English Fleet and their request to use [gun]powder to signal in the English Fleet's presence.
Edward adds he has seen the Devonshire Militia and that a mutiny in one battalion was the result of soldiers being unpaid, as the [4th] D[uke] of Bedford had not assigned an agent to pay them. He reports that the disturbance ended quickly when officers paid the soldiers themselves, but Edward feared another disturbance if the matter was not settled by the Duke and L[or]d Ligonier [Commander in Chief of the Forces].
