TitleMemorandum on the legal basis of the Regency
Date[?August 1788- February 1789]
DescriptionPresented as a draft bill addressed 'to the Nation', this text discusses the right of Parliament to appoint a Regent; and the inheritable quality of the Crown which aligns it to other inheritance practices, particularly in the case of the custody of a 'Lunatick''s estate and person. It is suggested that the person of the King should be in the custody of the Queen, and that the lands should be 'safely kept without waste' for the profit of the 'Lunatick' and their family. Includes discussion of the need for the Regent to exercise the 'executive Power of Government', and precedent for 'a Wife's jointure upon the Incapacity of the Husband'. Speech possibly delivered to Parliament.
