TitleLetter from Lord Malmesbury to George, Prince of Wales on the reasons why financial assistance from the King of Prussia is not possible
Date3 October 1791
WriterMalmesbury, 1st Baron of
AddresseeGeorge, Prince of Wales (1762-1830)
DescriptionMalmesbury refers to the Prince's desire to receive 'a considerable pecuniary assistance from his Prussian Majesty'. He states that the new Duchess of York will receive only 100,000 crowns as her marriage portion, and that the King of Prussia's finances have been reduced by recent spending on 'political as on private concerns'. He adds that the impression at Court that 'England deviated from its engagements and forsook his Pruss: Maj: in the late transaction with Russia' has damaged England's standing. Advising that the Prince's wish cannot succeed, Malmesbury declines to put an application to the King of Prussia, fearing that 'the secret would probably transpire & be reported to England where by misrepresentation it would do Y.R.H. essential harm'. Malmesbury learns from the [Duke of York] of a 'prospect of a more considerable sum coming from Cassel'.
