Admin HistoryThe executors appointed by the terms of George IV's will were the Duke of Wellington, Sir William Knighton and Baron Gifford. However due to Baron Gifford's death in September 1826 the task was undertaken by Wellington and Knighton, with the assistance of their solicitor Frederick Dawes Danvers.
ArrangementThe original order of the collection is unknown and it is also unknown when the records were assigned reference numbers and arranged predominantly chronologically. This chronological order has been maintained and minimal intellectual rearrangement has taken place to maintain this order within the catalogue. Undated letters have been given probable dates and catalogued in the appropriate order. Letter enclosures have been crossed referenced with their accompanying documents (where known) and catalogued immediately following the accompanying record, rather than by date written, to reflect the documents physical order and administrative use. The decision was taken to create Sub-Series for records regarding the same event/subject which had previously been physically grouped together, such as Frederick, Duke of York's marriage treaty, in order to reflect their probable administrative use, create an easily navigable catalogue, and avoid repetition at Item level. The creation of Sub-Series has not altered the physical or intellectual order of the records as those which refer to the same event/subject, but accompany different papers or appear further or later within the Series, have simply been crossed referenced.
