| Description | William states that [Maria] Duchess [of Gloucester's] 'unfortunate turn of mind', temper, and 'evil representations to' his children on every subject had made it necessary to ask the King's permission to appoint a chaperone for his daughter [Princess Sophia Matilda] and to send his son [Prince William Frederick] to university. He had informed the Duchess in writing, as he would not speak with her, that if she was more respectful she could remain in his house, and adds that when his daughter was a year old the Duchess had threatened to leave and now he was being punished for this 'juvenal indiscretion'. He also mentions his son's tutor, a clergyman [Dr. Philip Duval], and that this letter would be delivered by Mr Vincent who could provide more details. |
