TitleLetter from George III to Prince William giving advice on his required behaviour
Date10 July 1781
WriterGeorge III, King
AddresseeWilliam, Prince (1765-1837)
DescriptionAs William is leaving for the first time for a foreign station, the King wants to write down some advice that he will get delivered to William through Major General [Jacob] de Bude', to be read at the presence of Mister [Henry] Majendie. When away William is expected to follow the directions of Rear Admiral Digby - for what concerns the naval duties - and Mr Majendie; the latter will particularly look after William's studies, making sure that he behaves according to Christian principles. The King reminds William of his royal status and, as a consequence of that, of which kind of behaviour is expected from him; if he behaves properly the King will promote him.
About William's request to be able, once abroad, to write privately to his parents, the King confirms to have granted that for letters written to himself and the Queen only; all other letters written to brothers or others should always be read by Majendie.
