| Description | These letters are predominantly sent from Edward, as both Prince and Duke of York and Albany, to his brother George III, as both King and Prince of Wales, with the majority dating from 1759 whilst Edward was at sea onboard the HMS Ramillies during the Seven Years War. These mainly detail his pursuits at sea; weather conditions; movements of the British Fleet (including those that led to the Battle of Quiberon Bay); meetings with naval officers; and battles on land involving the Prussian, Russian, Austrian and British forces [possibly referring to the Battles of Kunersdorf and Minden].
The correspondence also includes Edward's final letter before his death to his brother [William Henry] Duke of Gloucester; a letter from Colonel St. John informing [William Henry] Duke of Gloucester of the Duke of York's death; details of his travels through the West Country; and letters relating to Thomas Potter and his claim that George III fathered a child with his wife. |
