Description | The memorandum describes the wounding of the Duke in the battle at Auerstadt which led to the defeat of the Prussian army under his command, Napoleon's refusal to recognise Brunswick as a neutral state, the departure of the Duchess and two of her sons from Brunswick, the capture of the duchy by the French, the death of the Duke at Altona, the refuge offered to the Duchess at Augustenburg, and the capture and release of Prince Frederick William.
