Lord North suspects that the King has been influenced by previous instances of the Secretary of the Southern Department overstating the interference of the American Secretary in foreign and military business arising in North America and the West Indies, motivated by hopes of recovering the Patronage and emoluments the Department lost when the American Department was created. |
