| Description | In 1820s the King’s Menagerie was established near Sandpit Gate in Windsor Great Park. In 1824 animals and birds began to arrive and were housed in sheds and enclosures that immediately adjoined the lodge at Sandpit Gate, these included a leopard, an elk, zebra, a kangaroo, an ostrich and a camel leopard [giraffe]. It seems that the majority of the new additions to this menagerie were either bought on impulse or as a result of gifts from friends and potentates. Bills concerning the purchase, cost of transportation etc. of these animals and birds can be found in the first subseries.
