Morshead states that he was unaware this action would affect Basset's interests. He explains that a discovery of payments to Charles Rashleigh from the 'emoluments of Smith's place for ye benefit of Mr [Richard] Barwell's friends in the borough of Tregoney' led to the decision to ensure those payments should benefit the interests of George, Prince of Wales.
