| Description | The Duke makes his excuses for not having replied to the King's letter sooner. He wants to clarify that, in the previous letter, he did not want to ask him to increase his income but he declared his intention to apply to Parliament on that subject - as Mr Pitt suggested the Duke's allowance to be of £12,000, whereas the King seemed to have intended £14,000.
To the King's suggestion to the Duke to lower his expenses through applying for foreign service, the Duke replies, reminding the King of his long service at sea where he faithfully carried out his duties, so that there should not be any doubt about his readiness to serve - or his efforts in trying to contain his expenses. |
