Letter from the Duke of Clarence to Colonel John McMahon
Date
12 March 1814
Writer
Clarence and St Andrews, William, Duke of
Addressee
McMahon, John, Colonel
Description
The British Troops have suffered severely [in the unsuccessful Siege of Bergen op Zoom]; the situation, however, is still quite not clear, and the Duke believes that neither Sir Thomas Graham [Commander of the British troops] is to blame or the discipline of the troops to be doubted.
He is still waiting for the ship to take him back to England: he is very anxious to go back home, but also very satisfied with what he accomplished on the Continent - and he paid the greatest attention to the family of Orange for their greatest kindness.
He encloses here a letter from the Pirnce of Orange [William I].
