| Description | Elphinstone expresses his opinion on Schomberg's case: he advises Prince William to replace both Schomberg and Hope [Sir William Johnstone Hope, Third Lieutenant] with other two officers, and, if that is not possible, at least Hope. He explains in details the reasons why he believes this is the best move in the interest of the Prince, and that the Court Martial should go ahead.
He then refers to the problem of the Prince's finances and his request for a higher allowance; Elphinstone mentions having written to Hotham [Lieutenant-Colonel George Hotham] as per Prince William's orders without, though, obtaining any useful information about how to proceed. He expresses his disapproval at the fact that Prince William is forced to live on such a small allowance, given his position and his duties.
In the post scriptum Elphinstone informs the Prince of Wales that his vote in favour of Lord Kinaird made him a Peer. |
