TitleLetter from Lord Grey to Sir Herbert Taylor, on the subject of corporal punishment in the army
Date8 April 1833
WriterGrey, 2nd Earl
AddresseeTaylor, Herbert, Sir
DescriptionLord Grey is pleased at the King's agreement with Viscount Althorp and Lord Grey's opinion on corporal punishment in the Army [i.e. to keep it]; the problem, therefore, seems now to be only about how to defeat the opposition. Lord Grey thinks it a good idea to make a concession on the number of lashes - this out of respect for the Duke of Wellington's Memorandum and to sedate discussions.
He declares himself ready to express his opinion in the House of Commons.
