Title
Letter from Sir John Macdonald to Sir Herbert Taylor on the subject of corporal punishment in the army
Date
6 May 1833
Writer
Macdonald, John, Sir
Addressee
Taylor, Herbert, Sir
Description
The main issue that Macdonald wants to discuss in this letter is the omission of some important offences from the catalogue of crimes [in the Cabinet papers] to which Corporal Punishment is to be applied; these offences are: desertion and stealing from civilians (and not only from a comrade) - he goes on to explain the matter in detail.
Before concluding, Macdonald makes clear the point that he would not accept loose discipline in the Army - and he would not mind, in order to fight it, to keep up a more violent regime.
