'I am so indifferent to the Affairs of this world, that I would Cheerfully descend from my Palace, to spend ye miserable Remainder of my days in a Cottage, if I were called upon to do so; I should not fear to lay my head upon ye Block, if it were necessary for ye welfare of my people; but I have not ye Courage to charge my Conscience with the Crime of Perjury'.
