Title
Letter from George IV to [Sir William Knighton]
Date
10 August 1821
Writer
George IV, King
Addressee
Knighton, William, Sir
Description
Writing that a few days of decency and decorum will be observed [following the death of Queen Caroline] before his public 'Entrée when all public Ceremonie, & Rejoicings will commence.' He will say little of his private feelings at this time as Knighton is his '[dearest] & best of Friends too intimately acquainted with them, to render this in the least necessary'. The little he has heard - for he has only had one short letter - is quite satisfactory and good. He praises God for the blessing that He has bestowed upon him in this recent event not least as 'it affords me a fair prospect of real & true happiness for the rest of my Days' but he will, of course, observe the utmost caution in his conduct during his stay in Ireland. He trusts that Knighton as his mentor will be satisfied not only with the tone but the contents of this letter and that any omission or blame must rest entirely with others although he does not think there is any one such person with him rather this will be found in London. Imploring Knighton to continue writing to him as he find these letters a comfort in his absence. That Frank is sitting with him at this very moment and he is 'the greatest possible comfort to me' and asking him to thank Watson who has given such zealous and active attention.
