Description
Neale writes to express his disapproval of the [Prince Regent's appointment] of the Duke of Clarence as Admiral of the Fleet, because Viscount Bridport deserved it more. Although Neale has never met Lady Charlotte [Charlotte Mary Hood, Baroness Bridport], his friends speak very well of her He received letters from Sophia and Mary[daugthers of George III] lamenting the bad state of the King's mental health.
Sir Henry [Hotham] is still off l'Orient and it is not sure when he will be able to leave because the French forces in the area have increased.
He reminds Bridport and his wife of his affection.
Two post-scriptum notes: Neale asks if Bridport has heard of Lady Hester Stanhope taking a cottage in the Bosphorus; the is directed to 'Sir Jos and concerns a promise made by Yorke to Shirley.
[A note on the mount dates this letter to December 1811; however, Hotham was serving under Rear-Admiral Sir Harry Neale off Ushant in 1812 when he was sent by him to cruise off l'Orient in order to intercept three expected French vessels.]
