Title | Letter from Princess Augusta to the Prince Regent |
Date | 5 March 1812 |
Writer | Augusta Sophia, Princess (1768-1840) |
Addressee | George, Prince Regent |
Description | Augusta writes a very personal letter to her brother asking him to allow her union with the man she loves - despite their difference in status. She begins her letter remembering the various times she has spoken to George about her secret love; she stresses the seriousness of the relationship which has lasted 12 years. She understands the difficulty of the situation and the need for a private marriage to keep the matter secret. In case the Prince would give his permission, Augusta would like him to communicate the news to the Queen - Augusta is confident the Queen would disapprove of the marriage and, although her consent is not needed, Augusta feels she would not be able to marry without her mother being aware of it.
