TitleLetter [in French] from the Princess of Wales to Mrs. Clayton [GEO/ADD/28/088], thanking her for good news, expressing relief that the sessions in the Upper House are coming to an end and that their friends had not been 'expos'd', commenting on their obligations to and appreciation of Mr Clayton, remarking on the size of 'our majority' and on the political manoeuvrings, and on 'the plebeian' [Sir Richard Steele?]; with transcription in French and English translation [GEO/ADD/28/056].
Daten.d. [a later pencil note suggests '? Dec. 8 1719']
WriterCaroline, Princess of Wales (1683-1737)
AddresseeClayton, Charlotte, Mrs William
NotesThe original letter is GEO/ADD/28/088. The French transcription and English translation are on two halves of GEO/ADD/28/056. Both documents bear the circled number '17', which shows the order in which the original letter was bound.
The proposed date is presumably suggested because of the subject matter of the letter.
Mrs Clayton has added two notes. The first identifies 'your freind' [sic] as being Mr Clayton; the second identifies 'the imperial family' referred to as being the 'Marlborough family', and also notes in this connection that the Prince [and Princess of Wales] lived at that time at Leicester Fields, which explains the reference to a family there. A later pencil note on GEO/ADD/28/056 records that the Prince and Princess of Wales went to Leicester Fields on 23 January 1718.
The suggested identity of 'the plebeian' is taken from GEO/ADD/28/078; GEO/ADD/28/053a.
