TitleLetter [in French] from the Princess of Wales to Mrs. Clayton [GEO/ADD/28/081], promising to send a reply to a letter received, stating that she cannot 'engage my self soe long before, it can't be till after this turn', remarking on the death of the Duchess of Shrewsbury and suggesting that this was at the hands of Sir J. Shadwell, and hoping that she and Mr Clayton are enjoying being in the country; with transcription in French and English translation [GEO/ADD/28/062].
Date13 July [a later pencil note has added '1726']
WriterCaroline, Princess of Wales (1683-1737)
AddresseeClayton, Charlotte, Mrs William
NotesThe original letter is GEO/ADD/28/081. The French transcription and English translation are on two halves of GEO/ADD/28/062. Both documents bear the circled number '10', which shows the order in which the original letter was bound.
The proposed year date is presumably suggested because of the subject matter of the letter; a later pencil note records that the Duchess of Shrewsbury died on 29 June 1726.
Mrs Clayton has added a note recording that one of the subjects in this letter relates to her request to 'the Queen' that Lady Pembroke might be appointed a Lady of the Bedchamber. The note goes on to suggest that 'This letter was wrote since her Majesty was Queen tho' it be misplaced as many of the others may be few or none of them having any dates'; however, a later pencil note comments 'Surely not - Geo II succeeded June 11 1727', which would be far too late to tie in with the reference to the Duchess of Shrewsbury's death.
