Title | Letter from the Duke of Clarence to Samuel Hawker |
Date | 28 September 1810 |
Writer | Clarence and St Andrews, William, Duke of |
Addressee | Hawker, Samuel, Lieutenant General |
Description | Acknowledging Hawker's letters from Lisbon and Cádiz in which he updates William on the situation there [Siege of Cádiz; General Thomas Graham, 1st Baron Lynedoch was at the command of the British and Portuguese troops in Cádiz, which was at that time closely invested by the French. The British Government attached great importance to the possession of Cádiz, as it was Britain's last stronghold in the Iberian Peninsula]. William believes that, although the situation in Portugal seems critical, the French are bound to lose; he also believes that the French risk going to war with Russia because of Bonaparte's recent decision to appoint Bernadotte Prince Crown of Sweden [Charles XIV & III John, also known as Carl John, served as regent and head of state for Sweden from 1810]. William stresses the importance for the United Kingdom to have a good army and the need for it to make a joint effort with armies of other nations to defeat Napoleon. |
