| Description | The Duke writes that he does not suspect the cabinet in Vienna of treachery, even if the Emperor wants to get rid of Flanders, but he is sure that certain members of the Prince of Coburg's general staff are betraying military secrets to the enemy, and that Baron Thugut is behind this and the Prince of Waldeck is his creature, while the Prince of Coburg is negligent and the Prussians have behaved abominably. But the Duke is pleased that the King approves his conduct. He comments disparagingly on the Abbé [?St Far]'s activities since he came to Brussels. He hopes the best for Lord Spencer's mission to Vienna. He is quartered between Breda and Bergenopzoom but the Dutch have unexpectedly withdrawn from the latter town, obliging him to send troops to protect it from attack. |
