| Admin History | George Rose (1717-1818) was educated at Westminster school and served in the Royal Navy. Upon leaving the Navy in 1762 he joined the civil service and was appointed as Keeper of Records in 1772. In 1777 he became secretary to the Board of Trade and subsequently appointed as secretary to the Treasury in 1782. Rose served as a Member of Parliament from 1784, when he was elected MP for Launceston, followed by MP for Lymington in 1788 and MP for Christchurch from 1790, a position he held until his death in 1818. As an avid supporter of William Pitt in 1788 he was appointed as Clerk of the Parliaments (which he held until 1818), and in 1804, with Pitt re-instated as Prime Minister, he became Vice President of the Committee on Trade and joint Paymaster General. After Pitt's death in 1806 he resigned his positions but maintained active by becoming the Vice President of the Board of Trade (1807-1812), and Treasurer of the Navy (1807-1818). Rose died in 1818 at Lyndhurst, Hampshire.
These papers were in the possession of George Rose's son George Henry Rose (1771-1855) a politician and diplomat who succeeded to the position of Clerk of the Parliaments after his father's death [and may be the source of the records in this Series which are dated after his father's death]. |
