| Description | Smart relates how he was taken under the 'especial protection' of George III when he was a boy as a private accountant, but upon the death of the King he was denied a pension as he was not a warranted servant. George IV subsequently hired him as a gardener at Brighton, before appointing him, in 1822, to establish and run a dairy at Buckingham House, under the control of Sir Samuel Hulse, to provide the King with butter and cream.
The letter includes details of receipts and payments undertaken in service to the King, amounting to £538.15.10, which Smart claimed he was owed. It is noted that because the dairy was a private concern the Lord Steward could not settle the account, and it has been annotated in pencil that £81 was deducted to create a total of £457.13.10. |
