TitleDraft of the preface to 'Bibliothecae Regiae Catalogus'
Date[c.1820]
Writer[?Barnard, Frederick Augusta; librarian]
Description[This is a copy of the preface for the printed catalogue of the library of George III, which is composed of 10 volumes, and differs slightly from the printed version, now held at the British Museum. This document is probably written in the hand of Frederick Bernard, George III's librarian, and assumed author of the catalogue.]
The writer provides a history of the Royal Library (which was transferred to the British Museum by order of George II) and the establishment of George III's library, which the writer believed would 'be a perpetual monument of the munificence, judgement and liberal taste of the Royal founder''. George III provided an annual allowence for the collection of books and his library included a collection of medals, a collection of drawing purchased in Italy 1762, and the library of William, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765).
Includes a copy of a letter from Dr Samuel Johnson [to ?Frederick Barnard], 28 May 1768, regarding the establishment of the Royal Library. In the letter Johnson offers his opinion as to what books to collect and mentions: a Welsh grammar book from Milan; the King of Sardinia; and books decorated with wood cuts.
