Admin History | Born 19 May 1744, Sophie Charlotte (known as Charlotte) was the second daughter to Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1708–1752) and his wife, Elizabeth Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen (1713–1761).
At the age of 17, Charlotte was selected to be the wife of George III, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, by virtue of her Protestant beliefs and good character. Before arriving in England on 8 September 1741, Charlotte spoke German and French but no English. During their lengthy marriage, Charlotte bore George 15 children, 13 of whom survived to adulthood.
