Description	Reflection upon the use and necessity of corporal punishment in the Army: the author puts the question into context providing information about the origins of the practice - which he relates to the system of raising armies by conscription or Ballot used in France since the French Revolution, a system that could and should never be adopted in the British Army - and its efficacy compared to other methods in given situations (eg. missions abroad; cases of drunkness; etc). The author concludes with saying that: 'if the State is to have an Army, we must maintain in it the use of Corporal Punishment'.
