| Description | Sending, enclosed, and for both FitzRoy and Lord Hill [Hill, Rowland, General, 1st Viscount Hill] to see, a letter recently received from the Duke of Wellington. The King has been discussing the matter [of corporal punishment in the Army] with Lord Broughman [Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux] and Mr Ellice [Edward Ellice the Elder], and corresponded with Lord Grey and Viscount Althorp [John Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl Spencer]; all this resulted in everyone being convinced of the importance of maintaining corporal punishment and the power of the Court Martials over it. The issue might be brought now to the attention of the Board for the revision of the Field Movements and Exercise, to act with the advice of the Duke of Wellington, the Secretary at War and the Judge Advocate General. He suggests Hardings and Jasper Nicolls should join the Board.
