| Description | Edward details his visit to Dorchester, and the 'facetious' L[or]d Shaftsbury showing him the Dorsetshire Militia, who were fine to look at but claimed their character was of those drafted from the 'scum of the people'. Upon arriving in Exeter he describes receiving the Freedom of the City, bestowing the honour of Freeman upon L[or]d Sh[aftsbury], George Pitt, Major Brudenell and [?George] Morrison, and as a result of the celebrations became 'too merry' by drinking 'many healths'. Edward adds that if the Bishop was not such a 'sacred personage to laugh about' he would call him as wicked a fellow as any, and advised George not to take a tour of the country as it would be 'impossible for you to imagine the effect it would have on all ranks of people'. |
