TitleAffidavit of Captain Jasper Morris
Date3 July 1728
WriterMorris, Jasper, Commander of the HMS Dolphin
DescriptionThis is the account of a declaration made by Jasper Morris in front of Jacob Schonneman, Secretary & Notary Public of St Thomas: Davers gives details of his encounter, on board of his ship MHS Dolphin, with a Spanish vessel. Despite counterattacking, the ship was taken by the Spanish who intended to direct it towards St Domingo. On the way there the Spanish deposited Captain Davers with some of his men on Crab Island where they stayed until they got a passage [from a passing British ship] to get to St Thomas. Other men (named) of the HMS Dolphin were carried to St Domingo. Thomas Markis, Walter Quaram [spelt Quarme at the bottom of the document] and Michael Galaway, all mariners who were also travelling on the HMS Dolphin when it was captured, confirmed Morris' deposition.
