TitleLetter from William V, Prince of Orange and Stadtholder of the Netherlands, to George III in response to his request for the release of 3 Scottish regiments currently in the Dutch service, during the American rebellion
Date17 October 1775
WriterOrange, William V, Prince of (1748-1806); Stadtholder of the Netherlands
AddresseeGeorge III, King
DescriptionThe Prince writes that George III's request to him to have the three Scottish regiments serving in the Dutch army released, in order to assist British forces against the rebellion in the American colonies, puts him in a difficult position as his army is weak and scarcely able to defend the country's borders. He has urged the States General to increase the number of troops, and while they deliberate this he can ill afford to lose the six battalions forming the Scottish Brigade. He points out that in any case very few of the soldiers apart from the officers are in fact Scottish.
