TitleMemorandum on a shield given to Henry VIII by the Pope
Date[1760s]
DescriptionMemorandum which recounts the history of Henry VIII sending his anti-Lutheran book to the Pope. The Pope in return sent a cap of [?]maintenance, plume of gold and antique shield depicting the deliverance of Rome from the Goths. Mr Dodswell wrote a dissertation on the history of the shield; its creation in the time of Nero, its escape from destruction, and subsequent repairs. It was deposited in the Tower of London after Henry VIII's death, after which it was reputedly sold by Charles II for its value in metal. It was then bought by a physician named Woodward who put it 'in his museum'.
