TitleLetter from Henry Dundas to George, Prince of Wales, on his request for military promotion, and the dangers of causing disunion with the King
Date3 March 1795
WriterDundas, Henry
AddresseeGeorge, Prince of Wales (1762-1830)
DescriptionIn reply to the Prince's letter (GEO/MAIN/39041-39043), Dundas argues that the Prince's Commission was not intended as a step to further promotion, and that the King has never 'felt the propriety of' the Prince pursuing a military career; and Dundas counsels him to instead 'cultivate and improve the blessings of peace'. As the Prince had suggested that he would separate from the King if his wishes were ignored, Dundas counsels him against this, citing the arrival of the Princess of Brunswick; the upcoming discussions of the Prince's debts; and the current political climate. He therefore asks to not deliver the Prince's message to the King.
