Date18 February 1797
WriterMcMahon, John, Colonel
AddresseeGeorge, Prince of Wales (1762-1830)
DescriptionMcMahon states that the Cabinet, influenced by Lord Clare and Mr Pelham, are resolved to take an opposite view to the Prince regarding Ireland, that 'coercion & not conciliation is to be "The order of the day"'. McMahon describes the enthusiasm in Ireland at the idea of the Prince's governance of the country. He suggests that the Prince's memorandum had been kept back from the Ministers, and refers to a 'groundless' report that the Duke of York and Prince Ernest were being considered for Ireland.
