TitleDraft letter from George, Prince of Wales to the Duke of York
Date26 August 1803
WriterGeorge, Prince of Wales (1762-1830)
AddresseeYork and Albany, Frederick, Duke of
DescriptionThat his letter was 'an official Tender of my serevices, founded intirely on the peculiar Crisis of these Times' intended to draw from the Government an acceptance of these services or an open acknowledgement that they have been offered and rejected. The King [George III] intends to take to the battlefield in case of invasion, 'a Purpose well suited to His Great Situation, and Spirited Character', but the Prince would have 'remained the only idle Spectator, if accident had not placed Him at the Head of a Regiment.' The present crisis supercedes 'those trifling points' of whether his first commission was received under Declaration to expect no further rank.
