DescriptionThe medals were to be awarded annually by the President of the Royal Society, at the Royal Society's anniversary meeting, for the most important discoveries in the preceeding year in a subject which had not been recognised in the previous five years. The two [silver-gilt] medals had a value of 50 guineas each (45 guineas for the gold and 5 guineas for the silver), and were cast with a portrait of George IV on the obverse and a portrait of [Sir Isaac] Newton on the reverse.
