| Admin History | Sir William Hoste (26 August 1780 - 6 December 1828) was an officer in the Royal Navy. He served under Nelson and became one of the most successful captains of the wars against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. His only active command after 1814 was when in 1825 he was appointed to command the royal yacht Royal Sovereign, which these papers document. They are mostly Hoste's in-letters.
Royal Sovereign was a naval yacht of 278 tons, laid down in 1804 at Deptford and broken up in 1849. Her length was 96 feet and her beam was 26 feet. Although referred to as the "Admiralty yacht" throughout these papers, she was used as the royal yacht, and thus provided transport and accommodation for members of the royal family. |
